Biography

Alex Otti is the Governor of Abia State; INEC declared him winner of the 18 March 2023 governorship election as the Labour Party candidate, with 175,467 votes to 88,529 for Okey Ahiwe of the PDP.[1] He graduated with a first-class honours degree in economics from the University of Port Harcourt in 1988 and earned an MBA from the University of Lagos in 1994.[2] He began his banking career in 1989 at Nigerian International Bank, a Citibank subsidiary, and later worked at Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank, Societe Bancaire Nigeria, United Bank for Africa and First Bank of Nigeria.[2] In March 2011 he became Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank.[2] He was previously the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State, a contest that ended when the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Okezie Ikpeazu.[2] For the 2023 election he named Ikechukwu Emetu, an engineer from Ohafia, as his running mate.[3] In May 2026 he won the Labour Party's governorship ticket for the 2027 election; Leadership reported he polled 368,230 votes in the party's primary, while the News Agency of Nigeria described him as a consensus candidate endorsed through a direct primary across the state's wards.[4][5]
